Hi all! This is Sealandish (aka ryoku, aka rioreader), your friendly podfic mod for the JayDick Flash Fanwork Challenge! I'm here to talk to you about blanket permission statements, specifically in this case for podfics.
Do you like podfic? Would you like podfic made of your work? Would you like to listen to some of your favorite JayDick stories in podfic form? If the answer to any of these is yes, then this post is for you! For those that aren't sure, let's get into the meat of it!
'What is podfic?' you might be asking. Podfic, is an audio recording of a fanfic, made by fans.
'Why is blanket permission statement important?' might be your next question. A blanket permission statement is basically a way of telling potential podficcers that you wouldn't mind if podfic was made of your work. Podficcers can (and do) ask on individual basis if they can podfic works, but that's sort of nerve wracking, and sometimes we never hear back. If podficcers know that they have permission, or even that you're likely to say yes when asked, they're much more likely to podfic your work! This is doubly important for events like this one, where there are two week limits on themes. If you as the author don't respond quickly (and let's be real, we all have lives and can't always respond as fast as we'd like) the podficcer might not have time to get their podfic out in time for the theme. A blanket permission helps all around! Having blanket permission statement will also get you on the Fandom Permission Statements (FPS) archive, so it's easier for podficcers to find your work!
'But wait, what does a blanket permission entail?' That's the good part! It can entail anything you want! It's just really good to let podficcers know you're preferences upfront. You can add caveats to your permission statement too! For example, “please inform me if you podfic my work” or “please link to the original story when you post your podfic.” It can include just about anything you want, and is an easy way for podficcers to know your preferences upfront!
'Do I have to do anything?' Not much! Just write up a small permission statement, and send it my way! You can do so here on Dreamwith, or on Discord. I'll then go ahead and get you on FPS! I'll also be compiling a list of JayDick friendly content users to share with the podfic community, so that we can encourage more JayDick work!
If you're still unsure, or have any questions to ask, feel free to @ me on discord, (I'm Sealandish there) or leave a comment here!
